Choosing a MOWER
Electric mowers
Ok, so the big benefits are; PRICE and EASE,
the big drawbacks are; Quality of CONSTRUCTION and SIZE.
They are usually smaller machines that can be easily manouvered into smaller gardens. They're
ideal for folks who don't want the hassle of starting a petrol engine. They also don't need too much servicing, though they
need sharpening and checking out on a regular basis. We like the better quality electrics, particularly the Hayter Envoy and
the Mountfield Princess.
Cylinder Mowers
The traditional type of domestic mower. They are not as popular as they used to be, but it is
still recognised that they give the best finish to a decent lawn. The roller on the rear gives you that traditional pin-striped
effect and the lawn looks great. The most popular machine in the Suffolk Punch, available in 14" and 17". Then there are the
Atco Balmorals, basically the same machine from the same manufacturer, but the Atco is 'beefed up' a bit. For all these mowers
there is the QX cassette system; a set of cassette cutters that allow you to change your cylinder for a scarifier, or even
a better quality cutter.
At the top end of the Cylinder mowers, there is the Atco Royale. These have been around for a
long time, and are very well engineered. Available in 20", 24" and 30" it is a top end mower.
Rotary Mowers
These are split into three seperate categories:
4-Wheeled Rotaries - The basic standard models. Usually supplied with a Steel
deck, to keep the cost down. Available from most manufacturers, you have a wide choice of qualities, sizes, and whether they
are push or self propelled.
Roller Rotaries - The same as above, but they have a rear roller instead of
wheels. The benefit is that you can 'Stripe' your lawn, and also that you can overhang cut borders around the edge without
falling into them. Also note that Roller rotaries are generally a lot more money.
Hover Mowers - Everybody has seen the Flymo mowers. They are not the 'answer
to all cutting problems', like people used to think, but there are jobs that they are particularly suitable for: Cutting
banks, verges, under trees. If you have a Lawn Tractor, perhaps a Hover is a good second mower for the bits where the Tractor
won't go.
Lawn Tractors
Once you get above the 1/4 acre of garden you have to consider it. At 1/2 acre you must be mad
if you don't.
We are big Lawnflite / MTD dealers and very proud of it. In simple terms there are the Mowmasters
at the cheap & cheerful end, the Lawnflites are in the middle with the most popular Tractors on the UK market, the Yardmans
are their big brothers, offering bigger engines and better drive systems, and at the top end are the Cub Cadets. Visit our
showroom to see and try. We are also big converts to the Mountfield front deck tractors. These are mulchers - not tractors
converted to mulching, but the real thing. If you cut your grass regularly, they give you a superb finish without the need
for grass collection.
